Sophia’s journey is one of resilience, ambition, and a desire to make a difference. With the guidance of Operation Fresh Start (OFS) and CareerScape Coordinator Aram, she transitioned from uncertainty about her career path to an internship at the Wisconsin State Capitol in the office of Democratic Assembly Representative Ryan Clancy. Her experience highlights the importance of mentorship, networking, and access to resources—elements she found through OFS and that continue to shape her career aspirations.
“Sophia came to CareerScape with both uncertainty and a spirit of exploration,” Aram said. “In addition to exploring opportunities in the state legislature, I helped her connect with an art therapist, theatre experts at American Players Theatre, and advocated for her with the Children’s Theatre of Madison.”
Additionally, before interning with Rep. Clancy, Sophia met with Rep. Francesca Hong and Dane County Executive Melissa Agard to learn more about the roles they serve in local and state government.
Reflecting on her journey, Sophia acknowledged the invaluable support she received from OFS.
“Without the help that I got from Operation Fresh Start and Aram, I don’t know if I would feel equipped at all in any other kind of work environment,” she said. I had no idea what steps to take next, and Aram provided the guidance I really needed to move forward.”
Coming from a family of small business owners who never pursued formal business education, Sophia was uncertain about traditional career paths. She had applied to various jobs without success, realizing how much networking and mentorship matter in career advancement. Through OFS, she gained essential skills, built a strong resume, and participated in multiple job shadows, which ultimately led her to the internship at the State Capitol.

Discovering the Power of Government and Community Resources
One of Sophia’s biggest takeaways from her internship has been learning how many resources exist that people simply aren’t aware of.
“I had no idea that you could call your government office and ask for help with challenges you’re facing,” she said. “Being here has made me realize how many people don’t know about the resources available to them. It’s really empowered me to share what I learn with my family and friends.”
Working in a legislative environment has opened Sophia’s eyes to the inner workings of government. She takes pride in informing others about the support they can access, helping constituents navigate policies and legislation.
“Our interns do so much real work in our office,” Rep. Clancy said. “It exciting to watch them grow.”
Rep. Clancy’s Chief of Staff Amelia Berendt added that it’s “super cool” to be working with Sophia and watch her grow.
“That is something we are very passionate about,” Berendt said. “We can use the power of the office to open doors for our interns and help them onto their next thing too.”

A Passion for Advocacy and Community Impact
Outside of her internship, Sophia helps her family run a smoke shop in Sun Prairie and works as a body piercer. While these jobs provide financial stability, her true passion lies in advocacy and policy work. Her experience in the Capitol has given her a platform to stay informed about legislation affecting communities she cares deeply about, particularly in areas such as cannabis policy and LGBTQ+ rights.
“I love hearing firsthand stories from customers, friends, and family because I can bring those real-world experiences into policy discussions,” Sophia said. “It makes the work feel personal and impactful.”
She describes the office atmosphere as welcoming and collaborative, breaking her initial expectations of a rigid, bureaucratic setting.
“I thought working here would be very structured and intense, but it’s actually a really supportive environment,” she said. “We work hard, but we also laugh, share ideas, and genuinely enjoy what we do.”
Finding a balance between hard work and a positive atmosphere is key, and that’s exactly what keeps the team motivated and connected.
“We take on so much here that if we’re not kind of laughing about this and that it would get really overwhelming,” Rep. Clancy said.

Looking Toward the Future
As Sophia continues her internship, she’s keeping an open mind about her next steps. She’s grateful for the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and build connections, knowing this role could lead to new possibilities in advocacy, legislative work, or even future internships.
“I appreciate that my family’s support has allowed me to take this unpaid opportunity, knowing it could open doors to something more,” Sophia said. “Hearing that former interns have gone on to staff positions in the Capitol gives me hope that I can continue growing in this field.”
Sophia’s determination to make the most of this opportunity was matched by the mentorship she received, helping her refine her skills and confidently navigate her career path.
“Anyone who meets Sophia can see her potential and coaching her to be reflective about her skills and effectively express her talents to community stakeholders was a process I was happy to guide her through,” Aram said.
Sophia’s journey is a testament to the impact of Operation Fresh Start and the importance of career mentorship. She has not only developed essential professional skills but also found her voice in advocacy and policy work. As she continues to explore opportunities, one thing is clear—she’s just getting started.
